A Maryland Special Police Officer (SPO) is a privately commissioned officer granted authority by the Governor to enforce laws and exercise police powers within a defined, specific property or jurisdiction. They are not typical public police officers but are hired by private institutions or corporations to protect their property and personnel, with the ability to make arrests and carry weapons on the property. SPOs must complete mandatory training and licensing to maintain their commission and authority.
